All you need to know about wolves
Hey, some of you don't know much of wolves huh? Well I've decided to help you out, now I don't know much but I know lots about their history and all of that. Being a wolf myself, I mean my spirit animal is a wolf since I've taken many tests...which the answer is always a wolf or a dog for me. I [/font]
History:
* Wolves have a very long history all the way back to the ice age, now the dire wolf which lived along side the gray wolf in the ice age was the biggest wolf that ever walked the earth. They were the size of a sabor tooth cat and lived in packs, when hunting they took down mammoths...yes mammoths if you wish to learn more about the extinct dire wolf there is a video on YouTube that is about an hour long which explained how they acted and such.
* Long ago but not that long wolves were hunted in the United states to almost extinction, only 100 wolves were left. They were hunted by men brutally by roping them and dragging them along until be shot and killed while the man stayed on his horse. Soon the land started dying, because without wolves the elk and deer were not hunted and they were overeating the land. No trees or grass grew and the animals started dying off, in 1980 they became extinct. Realizing this the men reintroduced wolves to the land only a hundred of course but it was enough. A couple years following the land had grown back, without the wolves to chase the elk, the elk would overgraze and so on. Wolves are now a protected species and they reside in the well known yellowstone national park.
Behavior and Such:
* Wolves have dominant and subordinate behavior, as Zee explained in another thread so I don't need to say much here. Subordinate behavior is slit like eyes and ears pulled to the back of their head, now I know most of you know about dominate behavior so I won't go into detail.
* Tail behavior is also a big thing among packs, Zee has also explained this with beautiful pictures to help you figure it out.
* Scent behavior is big, wolves have a sense of smell 100,000 times better than a human and under good conditions a wolf can smell up to a mile away. It is also very important for identifying pack members.
* A wolf howl is a signal, often to a pack. Think of it like a calling card okay? A wolf howl is deep and can last from half a second to 11 seconds.
* Wolves have an excellent hearing, they can hear a wolf howl up to six miles away in a forest and in a tundra they can hear up to 10 miles away.
* Alphas howl more often than those in the pack and pups often practice howling thus trying to mimic the adult wolves.
* Whines often come from adult females at the pack den site and growls often come from adult males showing aggressiveness.
* Wolves are known to be one of the only animals like humans that seek revenge, and their determination is a very good trait. Wolves never give up unless they know they cannot win this fight and they would choose life instead of risking it.
* Wolves are a family pack that are led by the alpha pair. They don't normally accept rogues and such, however this site is an exception. The alpha male often tries to mate with his daughters in the pack, but the daughters put him in his place and this is how wolves avoid inbreeding. Again, this site is an exception, and that doesn't happen here, heh heh.
* Wolves can run at 30-50 MPH. However certain wolves can only run certain speeds. For example, a very large wolf like Ocean couldn't run very fast, maybe 35 mph. At his top speed, he also wouldn't be able to run for a very long time without getting tired. A smaller wolf with legs built for running could run up to 40 mph.
* Wolves have a bite pressure of 1,200 pounds and it's enough to break bones.
* Wolf attacks are very rare amongst humans, they respect us and I turn you should respect them.
Facts are from my head from all the animal planet I watch, other facts are from national geographic and some facts belong to Azaelia, hope this helps you out. But it probably won't help out very much I guess...xD
