The she-wolf’s eyes were bottomless.
Miyako stared, motionless. Her tawny mouth was moving gently, twitching with tepid, soothing turns of phrase. Perhaps Mistress had taught her to speak — but as she pressed on, Miyako realized that she hadn’t. Not yet at least. Mistress was magnificently flamboyant when she willed herself to be, capable of crafting fantastical turns of phrase, and wielding enough talent to make any magical tale seem tangible. Many a mind had been lost to Mistress’s words. And yet these had a certain air about them. A stillness, perhaps something lacking the grandiose teachings of priests; an authenticy! That had been a word she’d known at some point, before everything had evolved into bloodshed and mayhem and malice. She couldn’t quite gather what she had said — it was so odd, hearing such a soft, gentle tone, but her panic had lessened. There was no evil within her. Within others, most definitely, but she’d remained serene. Her children had nothing to worry from this she-wolf, who smelt so very much of woods and earth and blossoms. She allowed her bristled hackles to fall back, her ears to unfurl from their flattened place. They could finally breathe. Perhaps she could return to where she’d been sitting, savor the new blooms—
Or perhaps not. Two soft presences slipped alongside her, supporting her sides before she could sink back into mud. "We're going to be safe here," A gentle airy voice assured her, nuzzling into her side. For a moment, she felt smitten, as though she could gather both her pups into her paws and love them all the rest of her days. How lovely they were! "Master can't find us here." Miyako shook her sorrel head quietly. How very much the two of them had left to learn — there was no winning, as she had said. There was only the postponement of the inevitable. And yet even still — there was no harm in savoring their last days far enough from harm’s away. It would give their minds a quiet rest, their bodies a much-needed break before they’d be forced to bear all once more. And she and her pups were so tired. Even now, she could feel the faint twitch of their over-taxed limbs; the balmy, shaky breathing. They’d get to sleep, for once, and perhaps even long enough to dream, if she even could any more. It had been so long since her last one. Why, she couldn’t even clarify if her children had ever had them to start with.
“Don’t shake,” She muttered softly, pressing forwards with an energy that was not her own. “We will sleep soon enough.”
