The sound of Luke’s howl still rang in her ears as her paws thudded against the ground, whisking her forward in a flurry of limbs. Noctis had seen enough death, and she was not ready for them to lose any of the scouting patrol that had gone out this morning. She pulled herself forward as quickly as she could, not even concerned with how quickly Zachariah was following behind her. She needed to get there as fast as she could. Ozmond was the General, and was one of the best fighters besides Zachariah in the pack. He would be able to keep the bear at bay at least until others got there. She didn’t know much about Ladislava and her fighting skills, but she knew that the she-wolf could take care of herself. Luke as well. Ater kept her mind as calm as she could, finally coming upon the eastern border from where her and Zachariah had been previously at the lake. It was not that far away, thankfully, so she was able to come upon the scene just in time to witness Ozmond’s death. A choked scream came from her throat as she watched the lifeless body of her packmate fall to the ground. She whipped forward, not caring for the rogues that had come to help. Why would they involve themselves in a pack matter? That wasn’t her business to handle though, it was Luke and Wren’s. Ater instead focused on the bear, seeing that a good amount of damage had already been done to it. She rushed forward, kicking into gear as her mind spun with possible outcomes. If she could signal to Luke that she was going to knock the bear over, she would be able to get a good grip on the bear’s neck and potentially kill it. She had faced bears before on her hunts, and knew exactly where their weak points were. And so, she slammed herself into the bears leg, charging quickly and effectively in hitting just right. Luke seemed to catch on, pushing himself onto the bears side quickly so that it would topple down to the ground. Before Ater was able to latch onto the bear’s neck, she watched as a rogue did that instead. She let out a growl. This was not his kill to take! If he were to kill this bear on their territory, that would make his situation even worse for him. Ater had been on enough patrols with Luke to see that. Although the Alpha seemed kind, he could be a hardass when it came to the rules he instilled in his pack, and expected from the wolves that wanted access into his pack. But he seemed to let go as soon as Wren came on the scene, and so she took that moment to latch onto the bears neck and rip into it, pulling a sizable chunk from it before ripping more. It let out cries of agony as she did this, but she had torn enough for the bear to bleed out quickly underneath her. Looking towards Luke, muzzle bloodied from her kill, she gave him a nod, and her attention turned towards Wren, who was currently dealing with the rogues. But the Hunting Superior was not necessarily concerned with what the rogues had to say, instead she took an alert stance, looking out across the borders to make sure that there weren’t anymore threats lurking nearby. She had found herself pumped with adrenaline and ready for a fight, that she had left Zachariah in the dust for the time being, the male slipping her mind momentarily as she made sure the rest of her pack was safe. After she was done, she looked over towards Ozmond’s body, guilt and grief coursing through her as she laid eyes on the male. He had been one of the wolves to first console her when she had first joined, and he had been a friend to her, to say the least. She approached his body slowly, letting out a whine as she looked down at him. Why did the bear have to attack on a morning that was supposed to be good? Why did it have to attack at all? Her blue and amber eyes looked towards the tree that Ladislava was against, the she-wolf’s body angled completely wrong, and no movement from her flank suggested that she had died upon impact. Ater didn’t know her well, but she knew that Tamlin had been close to her. And this was only going to make the tragedy in his life grow after seeing her dead. She brought herself to the ground, putting her muzzle into Ozmond’s flank before lifting her head to the sky and letting out a solemn howl. This wasn’t how today was supposed to go. Mayerthu was not pleased with the battle and was feeling as pissed off as the Alpha looked. After hearing his words she quickly moved out of the way and waited for her friends to do the same. After a moment she realized they were not doing so and surprise coursed through her body. Didn't they understand that an Alpha's word was law? It was then that she noticed the dead body and she dipped her head solomnly, it was never a good thing to see a wolf perish let alone someone that could have one day been her friend. She thought on this and eyed the approaching female wearily. She noted the gal's dominate posture and lowered her gaze. An Alphess and Alpha? It occurred to Mayerthu in that moment that her friends and herself had just trespassed. Mayerthu couldnt help but curse inwardly at her own stupidity. What chance would she possibly have now? Then the Alphess began speaking... “Whatever help you think you just gave us, I assure you it will not help you. First you trespass onto our territory, then you join a fight specifically after my mate told you not to. You could have gotten yourselves killed, or one of our wolves. Rest assured you would not have been forgiven had you caused the deaths of my packmates instead of the vicious actions of the bear. I can already guess why you all are here. You have my limited patience to try and explain your actions and tell us why we should even consider letting you become a member of our pack,”
Mayerthu approached the Alphess slowly but did not come too close, and she lowered herself in submission. "First of all, My name is Mayerthu I am not exactly used to these parts. I am deeply sorry for the invasion of your territory. I have seen so much death in my years that when I heard your mate call, I came in case my assistance was needed. I see now that I was over enthusiastic with my actions." Mayerthu fought down her emotions that were swelling inside. "I can be useful in anyway that you need me, though I am not skilled with plants." She said with a wry smile that quickly faded. "I know I have not given you much reason to consider me, but I would be honored to be apart of something greater than myself." With those words Mayerthu looked to the two leaders with serenity and awaited their decision. Mayerthu considered the possibility that they might kill her but what better way to die? Zachariah ran as fast as his limbs allowed, but it wasn't long before Ater had managed to outrun him. Her smaller size and great stamina made the Hunting superior a terrific runner, able to run great distances at an alarming speed, leaving the Paladin by himself, alone with the paranoia of whatever could be happening at the outskirts. Was everyone alright? Could anyone truly be in danger right now? Memories of Zero and Aeidon flooded his thoughts, another incident, another absence. The fuck am I even doing here anymore?
Upon arriving to the scene, Zack found himself standing before a nightmarish scenario. A bear, with it's fur and claws completely bathed in blood, laying dead on the ground, a group of strangers being confronted by the alphas, Ater with crimson liquid dripping from her muzzle and two wolves, unbreathing and unmoving, limp on the grass. "No...," the word escaped the ex-warrior, as he recognized one of the lupine's coats. "No...No...No," cried the male, fully knowing what had happened but trying to deny it with all of his soul. But reality can't be surpressed, and the truth was confirmed. Ozmond had died earlier that day, in a particularly brutal final encounter against something that was much bigger than him. "I didn't make it in time, again," he whimpered, feeling a singular tear falling from one of his eyeballs. The Paladin looked towards Ater, trying to make sense of what had just happened there. What beauty! Her brain was exploding with more possibilities than she was conscious of. The orange orb of sun shining through the canopy, milky clouds brushing the blue of the sky... She was hit with the brunt of sensory overload. A pandemonium of confusion coupled with the orderly chaos of the children caused excited laughs to permeate the woods, certainly making Ocean's existence unbearable. She had no idea where Father was taking her and her siblings, but she could only dream of what magic awaited. But there was a cursed half of Zelda's brain that told her not to be fooled by the friendly greens of the hills, because by night they were dark and ominous, and the inviting paths that were illuminated by a sun on the rise would always fade to a blackness that not even moonlight could help. What dangers and mysteries lay beyond the the towering trees that bordered the seen and unseen? The pup was soon befallen with distress when she realized how alone the children really were without Mother here, and her excitement faded when obligation arose. She couldn't play into the adventure, because somebody had to look out for signs of danger. She could ease her pain by giving Link and Midna the opportunity to enjoy themselves while Zelda worked to protect them like Mother would. The miniature pack stepped onto what Zelda was certain was pack territory. "Um, dad?" Zelda whined as a paw hesitantly dipped onto the grassy floor. Were they allowed to be here? There was familiarity in the smells that Zelda couldn't pin, and she couldn't decide whether to fear them or find comfort in them, for though there was semblance of Eureka there was also BLOOD.Now, Zelda was no kitten, but it didn't only take a coward to know that the splattering of blood wasn't a good sign. Yet Father took them even further into the questionable aura of death. Her heart beat faster with each step, but she remained composed for her siblings, and chose to put trust in her father. He was the biggest beast in the land and could surely save his children from any monster in the woods, and Uncle Percy's alleged experience would certainly put the pup's in the graces of survival. They stepped into a beautiful clearing, and Zelda stopped in her tracks, possibly causing one or both of her siblings to run into her stagnant form. Wolves, everywhere. The smell of blood was ever clear, but so was that familiar tone of home. "Dad, where exactly are we?" She glanced over to Uncle, the only other adult in the area who may have known what was going on. It was a pack, no doubt, but whose? And why were they here? What was their test? Rose eyes surveyed the terrain like a war drone, looking for every indication that would formulate a rational conclusion. The alphas were obvious; one of them was blatantly giving a piece of her mind to what were presumably rogues seeking to join. The other looked just like Eureka. She made the educated assumption that he was the source of that lovely smell. The source of the other, however, was laying dead only feet away. Zelda wanted to lock her eyes shut in the presence of death, but they were peeled open in curiosity and intrigue. Not the sinister kind, but the absolute crave for knowledge and experience that plagued Zelda. But there was more. Only a few more feet away was a big, black monster whose appearance didn't stray too far from Father's, but this thing was no wolf. She'd never seen a bear, but had been warned about them many times by her militant father and educated mother. If Zelda didn't know any better, she would have guessed that the children's test was to kill a bear, but it was already dead! What on earth was going on! g e n e r a l • o c e a n a reckless wolf with a selfless interior
He and his his three children, along with his uninvited brother-in-law, trekked along a path Ocean knew well. On either side of the trail, matted with the prints of traveling wolves, were small animals scurrying to beat the pack to their destination in hopes of surviving their passage. Even Ocean was tempted to end their existence just to sedate his gargling stomach, but it turned as the memories overcame him, memories of the last time he had left Somnus territory.
"Control your hunger. The ground we walk is no longer ours to harvest," he warned to his children. How spoiled they were with Jolon's generous scraps each morning; never had they faced the tyranny of starvation nor the dignity of self-sufficiency. It was why they were here today: to discover their roots.
"Not long ago, these lands were arid of life. Your mother and I went weeks surviving off nothing but the occasional lizard or mouse. Nobody came to our dens every morning and graced us with rich flank and fresh trout like they do you. Everything we had worked for was stolen from us, and we lost our earned privilege of survival.
"Your family suffered, and changed, just as you will throughout your life. It isn't something you can avoid, and if you don't have the right mental and physical tools when the time comes–and it will come, again and again–you will suffer the same fate as your aunt Shadow–killed by her inability to fight; your grandmother River–taken early in life because of her failure to cope with emotional pain; and what would have been me if your mother was not as determined as she was to save me. You are privileged to be surrounded by individuals who love you and will protect you at all costs, but they wont be around forever, and someday you will need to save yourself. Today, you will learn your identities.
"If you don't understand what it means to fight for your right of life, and what rewards await you when you do, you will never succeed. You will choose failure over working hard because it's easier, and, I'll be honest, it is. But you will never reach your full potential if that's how you choose to live your life.
"It isn't enough for me to tell you," he began as the soil beneath his feet became moist and the scents of the south became clearer. Feet ahead was the Noctis border clearing, and the small figures of his extended family finally came into view. "So I've brought you here. Welcome to Noctis, our extended family. It's about time you meet your uncle, and discover what possibilities await if you choose work over privilege."
Ocean, for once, shared a smile. His tail swayed subtly behind him as paws took him into the clearing, where he could see Luke and some of his packmates. The scene before him reminded him of his first year in Somnus, the pack's first encounter with a bear. It was a tragic event, yet he felt pride as the memory passed over him like a gentle breeze.
He raised his chin in Luke's direction, giving him a small "hello." He would be quite surprised to learn that Ocean was a father now, and the general was excited to learn what surprises awaited him in Noctis, too.

Post by Pup Link on Oct 31, 2019 8:42:13 GMT -8
Link padded dutifully along behind his Ocean, the ebony brute's massive stride keeping himself a few paces before his pup as they ventured forward into what the triplets would only know as the unknown. The world around them had proven to be much bigger than he thought, expanding past the home he knew and creating a home for others as well, urging him to explore it until he couldn't any more, though he was sure that was quite impossible. The wind had picked up, ruffling his fur and pushing the fluffy white clouds across the powder blue sky. Awe filled the pup to the brim and wonder swirled within his gilded eyes as the plush greenery and trees seemed to expand endlessly over the earth's crust. While many may have been overwhelmed by the sheer amount or terrain they fell upon, Link found himself entranced, his interest peaked at what dangers or discoveries lie ahead, just outside of the territory Somnus had come to call home. Without their pack here, they surely were considered vulnerable, but that only caused the excitement of discovery to bloom warmly within the pup's body.
"Um, Dad?" Zelda's whine caused Link to tear his eyes from the environment as the little she-wolf hesitantly continued on their path. But Ocean seemed confident, and Link fed on his aura rather than the unsure one Zelda had been emitting. Ocean knew what he was doing, of that, he was sure and that was enough to put the little male's mind at ease. Looking back at Percy, Link waited for a snarky remark or for him to playfully tease someone as he always had, he also wanted to make sure the male was still following closely behind them, protecting their rear just in case. The tinge of blood ensnared Link's senses, causing his nostrils to flare with slight disdain at the irony scent and unease snaked its way deep into his chest, digging its claws firmly into his chest cavity's walls, refusing to waiver. Link shook his head, knocking his thoughts from his mind as he resumed his confident composure, making sure to continue following Ocean as he finally opened his mouth to speak for the first time on their journey.
Animals scurried every so often on each side of the small pack, either racing up a tree or diving to find cover from the potential predators. Saliva pooled in Link's mouth at the thought of a tasty little morsel, they had been walking for quite some time and he wondered when Ocean would allow them to stop and deign in the delicious presents the forest provided.
"Control your hunger. The ground we walk is no longer ours to harvest." The general spoke and disappointment caused Link's ears to flatten against his cranium and disdain filled his features. But the expression and feeling soon dissipated as he was ensnared in his father's story.
When his father finished, Link's face was set hard in thought and he nodded as his brain worked around what he was just told. Confusion muddled his mind until they reached a gigantic carcass of a bear, recently slain and part of the cause of the immense blood smell, surrounded by wolves from another pack. Their scent seemed familiar, yet foreign, and Link understood now who they smelled like. A smile found its way to Ocean's maw, a feature he only rarely donned and Link looked incredulously between Luke and his father before mimicking the actions himself. Bodies lay strewn about their makeshift battle field and a pang of sorrow bounced off of his heart. These wolves died protecting their pack which was honorable, but still sad about how many were lost.
"Hello," Link spoke after his father, stepping forward towards Luke who he assumed was alpha. "My name is Link, son of Ocean and Azaelia." The pup bowed his head, before Luke, not daring to make eye contact with a wolf of such high standing. Link thought to introduce his sisters, but they were big girls and more than capable of introducing themselves, so he just stuck with his own. "I see there have been many casualties while protecting your borders, you have my deepest sympathies. I would like to offer my help with transporting any of your fallen to be laid to rest, if you'll let me." Golden eyes stayed downturned to the earth, deciding he would keep them there until he was given permission not to.

A young wolf, trying to enjoy all the good in life

The cinnamon coloured female was starting to get more anxious as seconds went by. Here she was, in the presence of two Alpha's, getting told off for fighting the bear. To make matters worse, she had to try and explain herself to have a single chance to get accepted. Her eyes were still looking everywhere but the two wolves in front of her. The fear, anxiousness and guilt were almost drowning her, like water being added to an already over-flowing cup. She looked to her friends for the second time, some of them have already spoken up. She noticed more wolves approached, probably were just passer-by's, she had gained the courage to slightly lift her head, just enough to catch a stern glance from the Alphess, which scared every little drop of hope out of her.
