The Prompt In only 250 words, introduce yourself to your fellow members. Include anything that is central to your identity or how you view yourself, such as your family, career goals, important life events or memories, hometown, etc. Be as descriptive as you can; to help you do this, you may not use any conjugations of the verb "to be" (be, am, is, are, was, were, been, being). For example, instead of saying "my name is Skyla," try "my parents named me Skyla."The Purpose We often taken advantage of the verb "to be" due to its copular relationship with adjectives ("the grass is green"), but this eliminates the impact of descriptive writing by generalizing our ideas. It also creates a sense of absolute truth. The statement "rock music is exciting" acts as a statement of truth instead of opinion, when in fact some individuals would argue that rock music is reckless and unpleasant. The absence of the verb "to be" will force you to think of alternative ways to describe details without leaning on comfort words that simplify, perpetuate, or misrepresent the subject. Notice in the examples below how the simple replacement of the verb changes the credibility of the speaker. The prompt will also allow your fellow members to get to know you better! Examples "Be nice to your sister today," versus "remind your sister that you love her." "Blueberries are gross" versus "blueberries appal my tastebuds." "My mother is amazing," versus "I admire my mother because she works hard to provide for our family, and has always supported my education and career choices." Criteria The response must be 250 words, give or take. It must be in first person It cannot contain the verb "to be," nor any of its conjugates. Example Response I come from a charming family of musicians. At every birthday dinner, customers goggle in silence as we belt Happy Birthday in improvised four-part harmony. Dad likes to go solo in every public setting, making sure to capture every eye and ear within a hundred-foot radius. Though I don’t aim for that kind of attention, I certainly share his passion for music. I discovered this around age three when I started harmonizing to Itsy Bitsy Spider with my mom. I performed for the first time at the same age and haven’t stopped ever since.I had never taken a voice lesson before a producer offered me a job as a vocal coach at his recording studio where I have worked for the past three years. The following year, the producer of Pitch Perfect selected me to perform as a soloist in Carnegie Hall. I then had the opportunity to sing solo again, this time in the Sydney Opera House. Now, I attend SDSU as the youngest vocal major on scholarship. Music has become so important to me that I can’t even begin to imagine a future without it. I would never have accomplished these things without the support of my family. Because of their musical backgrounds, my parents and grandparents understand the importance of my success as a musician; it means as much to me as it does to them. Nothing I do goes without the absolute support of my family. |
