Hello there, everyone! I am currently in the process of brainstorming for this new book, but before I go any further, I would like to see if it's actually something people would be interested in reading. Please give me your feedback!
Plot:
In the year 2575, historians invented a new way of analyzing history: the Time Piece, a small time travel device that is hung on a length of cord around the neck. However, after several tests, it was deemed dangerous. Thousands of volunteers had traveled into the past and been killed during the testing procedure. Despite this, there were millions of buyers all over the world who still wanted to use it to discover the truth behind myths and findings by other historians. Many of these buyers banded together to form the Inquiry of Historical Knowledge and Discovery, or the IHKD. This organization became the epicenter of all historical discoveries. People all over the world admired them for their efforts and success in the field of historical knowledge. The reason they were so successful, however, was something only members of IHKD knew.
Instead of using adults to operate the Time Pieces, the IHKD found a more expendable subject that no one would notice missing should something happen: Orphans. Every July, the head of the IHKD would come to a particular orphanage, which they worked quite closely with, and select the ten most intelligent children. Those orphans would then be taught how to operate the Time Pieces and instructed how to properly take notes on what they experienced in the time which they entered. This use to the Time Piece was even more dangerous than the original; the Time Pieces were modified so that the child could only teleport back to the present after 168 hours, or one week. If they tried, another day was added to the amount of time they had to stay. The children were sent in pairs, and if one remained, they both remained. After the week was up, if no one had tried to return, the children were automatically sent back. All the while, it was up to the children and their partners to survive. No protection, no adult supervision, and nothing to help them.
In the year 2609, 34 years after the original Time Piece was developed, Kaitlyn Varnan is chosen as one of the ten orphans to become a time traveler. At the time of her Choosing, she is 15 years old. Following her training, she and her best friend, River Advana, are sent on their first mission. However, something goes wrong with Kaitlyn's Time Piece. River is sent back in time to the Revolutionary War, but Kaitlyn is sent 300 years into the future. She finds the world in crisis. A massive crack has spread across the earth, winding all the way around from pole to pole. The gap is of of varying widths, sometimes several miles wide and others barely a few feet, as well as of varying depths, from1 to 15 miles beneath the earth's surface. The crack branches off into thousands of passageways and caves. Kaitlyn discovers that it is IHKD who caused the crack to form. The Time Pieces work because of a mineral in the earth called castorite, and the constant use of the Time Pieces caused much of the castorite of implode, forming the crack. As soon as the crack formed, IHKD temporarily ended all time travel projects (until the castorite problem had a solution, they decided that it was too dangerous), and began to work furiously to study the crack for clues as to how to fix it. The governments of the earth fell to pieces in the mass panic the followed the castorite implosion, and the IHKD took over the world. Now they could use whatever resources they wanted for their studies. They captured children from all over the world, particularly areas they had little control over so as to reinstate their power, and sent them into the crevice, seven every week. The day she arrives, Kaitlyn is captured and prepared to be sent into the crevice in two days.
On the day she is meant to be sent into the crack, Kaitlyn is strapped into a harness covered in cameras at all angles so that the IHKD can see whatever she sees, and connected to a rope. She is taken to the crevice's most shallow point, one mile deep, and instructed to unfasten herself from the rope as soon as she reaches the bottom. Upon reaching the floor of the crevice and detaching the rope, removing her only way out of the crack, Kaitlyn is almost immediately attacked by a monstrous creature beyond even her wildest imagination. She is rescued by a boy about her own age, Daniel, who, upon inquiry, explains that he had been in the crevice for a year now and had encountered the creatures many times, and that he was from the same time as her, his Time Piece having malfunctioned and then been destroyed by a monster before he could return. According to him, the monsters had lived beneath the earth's surface for eons without anyone knowing, until the castorite implosion gave humans access to their lair. Becoming panicked, Kaitlyn realizes that she has four days until she is called back to the present, assuming her Time Piece still works, and in that time she must stay alive and find a way to stop the IHKD and prevent any of this from happening. She manages to survive the four days with Daniel's help and uses her Time Piece to get them both home. Once she has returned, will she be able to stop the IHKD before it's too late?
